The Firehouse Track
The Firehouse Track is so named because all of these sessions will be held in the Firehouse Auditorium. These meetings and are expected to interest a broad spectrum of people. Some will be led by one person, but most will be panel discussions, featuring several members of our community.
Welcome, Logistics, and Kickoff
Doug Lessing will open the conference, welcoming everyone, and reviewing the pragmatic details that everyone needs to know. Fran will then discuss the themes of the conference, it's objectives, and highlight some of the key aspects that make this first-ever user conference a special event.
Introducing Title Management 7.0
Doug will take us through many of the new functions and features available in 7.0. We are very excited to show you where the software is heading, and allow you to start to think about how you might take advantage of it in the future.
How Open Does “Open” Need to Be, in the Universe of Free?
Michael Jensen from the National Academies Press will give a reprise of the talk he gave at the recent "Tools of Change" Conference hosted by Tim O'Reilly. How do different presentational models — page image, HTML, PDF, ASCII — affect the monetization potential of a publisher’s online site? Building online reading facilities for search engine harvesters, blogspace, grazers, researchers, and specialists each require a set of strategic principles for providing appropriate free access. At what point in the customer/publisher value chain are purchases replaced by free access? What formats provide the customer enough for free that they want to pay for the rest/best version?
Title Management - Outside the Box
In this panel discussion, several of our customers will demonstrate some interesting uses of Title Management. Some of these demonstrations are logical extensions of our software, but some eminate from very creative adaptations. The purpose of this session is to make you think about what new and interesting ways we may be able to serve you!
Digital Content Management and Distribution
With the recent spike in popularity of e-reading devices, publishers are rushing to make sure that their backlists are digitized and stored in a way that makes them easy to distribute. Join this panel as they discuss some of the wins, losses, and continued challenges when it comes to ebook creation, management, and distribution.
Online Promotion - Outside the Box
Recent articles in the daily industry newsletters speak volumes about how traditional promotion activities are being quickly obsoleted in favor of online promotion efforts. Join this panel as they discuss such diverse topics as Search engine optimization, Social Networking, Blogs, podcasts, Author Community Sites, email marketing, and even video trailers.
Speed Demo's
In this session we've invited our sponsors to make 5 minute presentations about their products and services. The sponsors for this conference have all been hand-picked as suppliers that have an excellent working relationship with Quality Solutions.
eloquence Partner Conversation - Breaking the Logjam
The fact that the eloquence team acts as a single conduit for publishers in dealing with their data partners (and vice-versa) is generally considered one of the main strengths of the service - 95% of the time. The other 5% of the time, it seems that the publishers and data partners would be best served if they could speak to each other directly. Join this 'double panel' discussion (one panel of publishers, and one of partners) as they engage each other, and the audience in a discussion of issues that might not be adequately communicated.
BISG and BISAC - Breaking the Logjam
Members of Quality Solutions often participate in industry standard meetings and other meetings held by BISG. However, we don't always communicate what goes on at those meetings to our community. Come hear Michael Healy, executive Director of BISG as he addresses some of the more interesting projects going on this year.
Application Track
The Application Track is designed to delve into further detail about eloquence and the application software. All Sessions in this track will be held in Room 1 of the Quality Solutions offices.
eloquence Behind the Scenes
Catherine and Linda will present how the eloquence process works in some detail, including some discussion of our weekly and monthly processes. Additionally, they will discuss how to use the verification routines, pre-flight reports, and feedback reports to improve data quality. Lastly, Catherine will spend a little time showing how eloquenceweb.com has been enhanced to provide even more tools for evaluating data issues.
Ebooks and Audio Books and eloquence
Starting this spring, eloquence will start distributing metadata for ebooks and audio editions. Catherine will discuss some of the detail things that publishers will need to do in order to take advantage of this additional service.
Title Management Tips and Tricks
Brock will lead a discussion about some of the tools built into Title Management that we notice get little or no use. Several of these tools can help make your life easier, especially when it comes to searching and sorting lists of titles and contacts.
Underlying Technology Track
The Underlying Technology Track will be held in Room #2 at the Quality Solutions offices. The purpose of this track is to support the 'technology people' who are coming to the conference. This track will delve into issues related to QSI's underlying database, and reporting features.
Database Behind the Scenes
Brock and Bill will host a session for IT folks who need to administer and work with the Title Management database. Brock and Bill will discuss the general database structure, and techniques for keeping the database performing optimally.
Crystal Reporting Behind the Scenes
Paul and Rob will lead a session for IT folks who are responsible for developing reports for Title Management. Paul and Rob will discuss the structure of the reports, show some of the "seed" reports that we package with the product, and review the use of database functions in reporting.
Crystal-Cool Reports and Advanced Tricks
Paul will continue building on the first session, demonstrating how he has used subreports and various stored procedures to create some very spectacular reports. This session is stronly recommended for report developers.
Database Functions and Procedures
Bill and Paul will take more time to go in depth on the creation of functions and stored procedures. These database tools are the building blocks for every report and feed. Understanding their power, and how to create them offers our clients a lot of power in using the data in Title Management.
Development Team Q&A
This session is an informal meeting for anyone who wants to meet with the development and QA teams. The team will present what goes into the delivery of a new release or a patch, so that those who receive those upgrades can better understand the process.
QSI's Hosted Services
Doug will lead a session that discusses our arrangement with Navisite, and how our clients can take advantage of this state of the art data center. By the time the conference comes around, most of our "hosted" clients will be up on Navisite.
Business Track
The Business Track will be held in Room #3 at the Quality Solutions offices. It is intended to be a series of sessions that will deal with business related issues that will be of interest to a smaller subset of the conference attendees.
Production - Outside the Box
In this time where the 'Long Tail' theory rules book publishing, and at least one major printer is nearing bankruptcy, production and initial inventory planning are becoming more important to the bottom line than ever before. Join this panel as they discuss Print-on-Demand, Foreign sourcing, the use of electronic galleys, and the impact of electronic publishing on their plans for the future.
Join panelists:
Anet Sirna-Bruder Vice President, Production, Harry N. Abrams
Christine Coffin- Director of Production, Yale University Press

The roundtable sessions will be held in the Quality Solutions offices during the lunch hour on Wednesday. There are three scheduled and one will go on in each location. Pizzas will be provided.
Title Management Roundtable
Got an idea? Got an issue? This session is a completely informal way to communicate to the Quality Solutions team anything that you would like to see in the software, or simply issues that just seem to nag you. Brock and Susan will be in attendance. No one knows these systems better, or can better help you find a way to accomplish what you are looking to do.
CDC Roundtable
Several clients of the University of Chicago Distribution Center will be in attendance. So they have an opportunity to discuss common issues, this room has been set aside for them. Pizza will be provided.
